Important Update: New Cell Phone & Device Policy at Merkel ISD (HB 1481 Compliance)

Dear MISD Families,
We want to inform you of an important change for the upcoming school year in response to House Bill 1481, a new state law aimed at reducing distractions and supporting a focused learning environment.
Beginning this school year, all Merkel ISD students will be required to keep their cell phones and other personal communication devices (including smartwatches) powered off and stored in their backpacks for the entire school day—from 7:35 AM to 3:58 PM. This includes lunch and passing periods.
Important to Know:
- If a personal communication device is seen or used during the school day, the device will be confiscated.
- District disciplinary procedures will follow.
Backpack Storage Reminder:Some teachers may require students to store their backpacks in their lockers during class. For this reason, we recommend that each student bring a lock for their locker to help secure their belongings, including their phone.
